Correspondences, Hillvale Gallery, Naarm Melbourne, 1-31 May 2026

Correspondences proposes a dialogical exchange

between bodies and land, through the work of

eight lens-based artists who each engage with ideas

of place and space. Working in a settler/colonial

context on unceded land, each artist is informed

by eco feminist critique that proposes a relational

and intersectional ethic of care for ecologies in

our current climate crisis.

primary mode of expression

precisely for its

complicated entanglement with the colonial

history of landscape photography. Subverting

dominant visual representations of bodies;

in this case variously female, queer, non-male

and non-white, the exhibition proposes an

interconnected and reciprocal exchange

between body and place, photographer and subject.

Included in the exhibition is an essay

Working from the middle by Kelly Hussey-Smith.
